What is a Brown Scapular?

“According to a pious tradition the Blessed Virgin appeared to St. Simon Stock (q.v.) at Cambridge, England, on Sunday, July 16, 1251. In answer to his appeal for help for his oppressed order, she appeared to him with a scapular in her hand and said: “Take, beloved son, this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment, will not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in dangers, a pledge of peace and of the covenant”.  Source.

I wear the Miraculous Medal and medals to St. Benedict and Our Lady of Guadalupe in addition to a cross. And usually a rosary bracelet. There are so many different devotions to choose from, and these are the ones that call to me.

I? do wear a brown scapular. Hand made by Carmelite Nuns. They are beautifully done and well made. My current scapular is at least four years old.

I’ve been wearing one for sixteen years, after debating it with myself for two years. Then the priest offered it on the feast day of The Annunciation. Time for that “Yes”. Everyday. I’ve worn out several, but never without
Our Lady wants all to wear it.

I purchased some books from St Vincent De Paul’s and saw behind me a wall plaque of Mary and than turned and saw two used brown scapulars in which I purchased along with the plaque. That week I dreamed of a brown scapular coming out of the darkness as if it were being given to me. Days later I purchased two scapulars from the Carmelites in the USA. A few weeks later I travelled and attended a Catholic men’s three day conference in which on the historic day of Simon Stock, July 16th I had a priest enroll me into its confraternity after mass. I was filled with my Lords peace and was feeling grace like I had never before felt, and for what seemed like about 30 minutes I was in this heightened state when as I snapped back to reality there was a Nigerian man before who’s name was written on his name tag GRACE
One of 150 or more men who were all gathered together.
